A number of members are gathering up momentum to have a General Meeting this fall.  If you are a certified member, you can vote on the new Board.  Bylaws need to be updated and membership categories (and voting rights) should be redesigned to be more equitable.  Artificial Intelligence is something that may impact our field in the near future.  What will best practices be? How can we best partner with our newest interpreters, Deaf people and Deaf interpreters, and others we serve in the Commonwealth ?

Who decides?  How does it work?

Everything that needs care in an organization is divided into domains. Each domain is taken care of by a group of people (called a ‘circle’).

For example, a membership circle takes care of the membership domain, making decisions and policy about members and membership. A Website Circle makes all the decisions about the website domain. A Marketing Circle takes care of the marketing domain and makes all decisions and policy needed along the way. Makes sense, right? 

Note that these circles actually have all the authority (and responsibility!) in their domain. The Website Circle doesn’t need to ask anyone for permission on their decisions on the website. There is no central power making decisions while the rest just carries out as they are told. That’s why we call this system decentralized or distributed authority. All we need to do is make a system so we can decide who decides and then many people can make many decisions in many different places.

RID's Ethics Committee is beginning to redesign the grievance system and now is the time to help think it through and discuss.

The Core Team and those who are in current circles (Governance, Professional Development, and Membership) are going to be doing a small-group study of the application of sociocracy.  We've purchased a course from Sociocracy For All, which includes some independent study and then coming together as a group once a month for 4 months in order to practice in a guided process.

Novin’s primary purpose is to support novice interpreters in the first few years of their career. We are pleased to announce that another cycle of the Bridge Program is just around the corner! Whether you have 25 years of experience or two months, this program is for you! Traditional mentor-mentee programs imply a long-term, senior-junior relationship. Therefore, Novin | Boston is stepping away from the traditional mentor-mentee model to foster a more personalized learning opportunity. We strongly believe that everyone has something to offer one another no matter their experience level.
